Bee beauty: the power of bees in the beauty industry
Bees are severely under threat and, as a consequence, so are we humans.
Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem and they do so much for us: their pollination
is responsible for around one third of fruit production in the UK and without them
our world will be seriously under threat.
Bees don’t just make the honey we put on our porridge, but a whole host of fabulous
things that work well in beauty products, too. This column is in praise of the beauty
of bees.
1) Therapi Propolis+ Ultra Radiance Cream
Therapi is a beauty brand created by Tanya Hawkes, who is passionate about bee conservation and hosts bee-keeping courses. She tends to her hives bare-handed
and has formulated her own skincare after finding herself allergic to most products
on the shelves.
As well as honey, bees make propolis – which is amazing stuff. It’s made by bees
from a resinous substance collected in tree buds. If there’s a hole in the hive, the
bees will patch it up with propolis, and it’s also used as a disinfectant. Once, a
mouse was found mummified: it had crawled into the hive and died, and to prevent
infection the bees had coated the whole creature with propolis.
