There are more than 35.5 million Spanish-speaking people in the U.S., and more than 45 million who speak Spanish as a first or second language. As a result, Matrix organized an elite squad of Spanish-speaking styling professionals called, "Latino Expressionists." Led by Matrix Artistic Designer Robert Santana, this dynamic group of 14 stylists will provide Matrix education to Spanish speaking hairstylists throughout the U.S.

"We have observed the rapidly growing Hispanic market for some time now," says AVP of Education Cheryl Nishi. "We felt it was important to create a group of educators to communicate with these stylists, and to present our message in a consistent manner. With Latino Expressions, we now have an incredible team that is technically strong and philosophically aligned."

The initial "Latino Expressionists" team consists of: Carlos Ramirez, Santa Ana, Calif.; Jose Rodriguez, Orange County, Calif; Alejandro Araya, Atlanta; Azriel Arce, Providence, R.I.; Juan Blanco, Mamaroneck, N.Y.; Junno Rivera, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Elvira Garcia, Chicago; Patricia Rodriguez, Milwaukee; Fabian Cisneros, Naples, Fla.; Rodsly Ortiz, Houston; Lorraine Marie Cortes, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Lorena Dominguez, Carney, N.J.; Angel Delgado, San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico; and Ray Rojo, Ft. Morgan, Colo. Santana will continue to recruit and lead the training for additional team members.

"I'm so excited to work with this team" says Santana. "Each is technically strong and passionate about the opportunity to contribute something important to their culture. I believe they will provide Matrix with a powerful voice within the Latin hairdressing community."

Latino Expressions is currently available for classes and seminars in New York, Florida, Texas, California and Chicago. The first team show presentation is scheduled for America's Beauty Show 2012 in Chicago. Throughout the year the bi-lingual team will continue to debut at major shows and events.

Shakira's Speech at the swearing-in Ceremony for the White House Initiat...

MEDIA RELEASE

Angus Mitchell, son of the late hairdressing and Awapuhi hair care product icon Paul Mitchell, and current co-owner and artistic director of John Paul Mitchell Systems and owner of the Angus Mitchell Salon, Beverly Hills, has donated a Big Island parcel to The Nature Conservancy.

The seven-acre coastal property is valued at $6.5 million,

Located at Kiholo Bay on the North Kona Coast, the property features freshwater-fed pools and native plants and marine life in an area known for the historic fishponds of Kamehameha I.

Paul Mitchell, who acquired the land in the late 1980s while battling cancer, intended to build his dream home there, but died in 1989 before realizing his vision.

“My dad shared his love of Hawaii with me, and I fell in love with this beautiful land,” said his son, Angus. “This parcel was my father’s Eden — his Shangri-La. He thought it was the most beautiful spot on Earth, as do I. This land evokes a wonderful spiritual energy and beauty, and I believe I can best serve his intentions by having this land protected in perpetuity. Although it is difficult to let this Kiholo land go, it is my love of Hawaii that makes it feel right to donate it to The Nature Conservancy. The love for Hawaii will live on in the Mitchell family for generations to come.”

Suzanne Case, Hawaii executive director for The Nature Conservancy, called the Kiholo Bay property ‘a rare treasure.’

“We all thank Angus Mitchell deeply for this extraordinary gift to Hawaii. The Nature Conservancy is very honored and humbled to play a role in the long-term care of this incredible place,” she said.

The Kiholo property is covered by two large, interconnected freshwater spring-fed pools which contain habitat for native species such as hapawai (mollusk) and opae (shrimp). The ponds are connected by a 200-foot-long auwai, or stone channel, to Kiholo Bay, which is rich with marine life and has a resident population of green sea turtles, which use the inland ponds to feed and rest.

The Kiholo Bay parcel hosts threatened, migratory shore birds, and abuts Kiholo State Park and a few small private landholdings. It is a culturally important site to native Hawaiians, especially those who continue to live in the area and trace their ancestry back to the land.

The area is currently under the stewardship of the non-profit group Hui Aloha Kīholo.

“We are grateful for Angus Mitchell’s generosity and vision for the greater good of our beloved Kiholo,” said Kuulei Keakealani, the group’s representative. “We have always dreamed of restoring these important ponds. We look forward to continuing the enhancement and stewardship efforts in this wahi pana, or storied place, and we welcome The Nature Conservancy and its honorable missions to this effort.”

According to Case, current caretaking of the property will continue, and over the next few years The Nature Conservancy will work closely with Hui Aloha Kiholo, the State and other stakeholders to determine the best long-term stewardship for the land.

Kiholo Bay is located along one of the most beautiful and remote stretches of coastline on the Big Island. Indeed, the area was once coveted by Hawaiian chiefs for its rich marine life — its productive nearshore reefs and offshore fisheries, its fishponds and anchialine pools.

Early Hawaiians developed an important fishpond near the site that was used for food production. According to Hawaiian legend, during the 1801 eruption of Mount Hualalai, lava was advancing toward Kiholo when King Kamehameha I, trying to appease the fire goddess Pele, tossed a sacrificial pig in its path.

Pele, who had come in pursuit of awa and mullet in the fishpond, accepted the offering, and the flow ceased. But decades later, in 1859, when Kamehameha was no longer living, Mauna Loa erupted, filling the nearby fishpond with lava.

In the late 1800s, the property was acquired by the Hind family, who cared for the ponds and planted a majestic grove of coconut trees near the shoreline. The Hind family sold the property to Paul Mitchell in the late 1980s, a critical time in his life.

“The property became a comfort to him and a place of healing as he fought cancer,” Angus Mitchell said. “During these months, he spent much of his time and energy planning the construction of his home and the restoration of the fishponds. Sadly, he didn’t live to realize that dream.”

The property was held by the Paul Mitchell Estate for many years until its transfer to Angus Mitchell, the estate’s sole heir. After much thought and contemplation, Angus decided to donate the property to The Nature Conservancy.

This is the second donation of Hawaii lands once owned by Angus’ father Paul Mitchell, following an earlier donation of a cultural site to a local non-profit.

Angus Mitchell, now 41, has followed his father into the hair care industry. He is owner of the Angus Mitchell Salons and co-owner of John Paul Mitchell Systems & Schools, a multi-million dollar enterprise that trains future stylists and markets professional hair care products.

The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The Conservancy and its more than 1 million members have protected nearly 120 million acres worldwide.

CEW: A Look at the Hispanic Market

December 14, 2011
CEW’s next Women & Men in Beauty Series - New York on Thursday Jan. 19, 2012, will zero in on Marketing Beauty to the Hispanic Consumer. DoshaCare is 98% Natural & Organic – other natural and organic lines start with natural and organic ingredients and attempt to create result oriented skin care. We approached it differently. We recognized that the best skin care is skincare that is used regularly and this will only happen if the consumer sees results. We researched and determine that there are three extreme skin conditions that motivate consumers to seek skin care products. Dry, Sensitive and Oily skin. We formulated first using the most advanced cosmetic chemistry breakthroughs to achieve formulas that give visible results. Once we had these formulas we went to our arsenal of natural and organic ingredients and swapped out everything we could. The result is skin care that is both natural and organic and works.

Izel Nails (Sunday 9:30am-11:00am)Room Name: PACIFIC

Educator Mireya Cardona

NLCA Educates at ISSE "3D Fantasy Art Nails" Class Description- Learn the art of painting 3-D flowers on nails from Mireay a Pro Master Nail Technician. Growing a successful business requires an
understanding of concepts that are rarely used and understood in the
industry. Owning a chair or owning a salon must be seen as a unique
opportunity with unique challenges where both entities must coexist to
survive and prosper.

For the salon owner, an introduction of cost benefit and break even
analysis, understanding costs from a unique perspective- namely,
identifying floor and shelf space as a valuable assets. When does it
make sense to take on a product line and when does it not. Learn how
to make the business more profitable by finding new unexplored
opportunities.

For the stylist, the individual will learn how to evaluate the highest
and best use of time (effective utlilzation). In the spirit of this occasion, we put compiled our Top Ten Latino Facts that together represent a snapshot of where we are and where we’re going.

1. One in six people in the U.S. is Latino. That’s 16.3 percent of the country’s population or 50.5 million Latinos. And we’re growing at a faster rate than any other group. In 2000, the Latino population was 14 percent of the population; in 2050, it is estimated it will be 29 percent.

2. Six hundred thousand Latinosturn 18 every year. That’s 1.2 million every two years, enough to create 1.5 new congressional districts.

3. Only 50 percent of eligible Latinoscame out to vote in the 2008 elections, among the lowest voting rate of any group.

4. Latinos make up 50 percent of inmates in federal prisons. The majority of Latino federal prisoners are jailed on felony immigration charges. The growth might be due to the increased use of the Secure Communitiesprogram, which checks the fingerprints of every person booked by local law enforcement agencies against Department of Homeland Security databases for immigration violations. This number could continue to grow as the Secure Communities program is expanded to every county in the nation.

5. Meanwhile, Latinos account for only 15 percent of student enrollment in two- and four-year colleges across the country. The numbers are growing. From 2009 to 2010, there was a 24 percent enrollment jump, bringing Latino enrollment up to 1.8 million. At the same time, only half of these students are graduating from college.

6.More Latino children are living in poverty, 6.1 million in 2010, than children of any other racial or ethnic group. This marks the first time in U.S. history that the single largest group of poor children is not white. In 2010, 37.3 percent of poor children were Latino, 30.5 percent were white and 26.6 percent were black.

7. Looking for a job? You’re not alone. Unemployment among young Latinos (18-24) was at 20.1 percent, compared to 15.9 percent for whites and 31 percent for blacks in July of this year, nearly the same as in 2010. In response to these rates, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis created employment programs intended to help young adults join the workforce.

8. One of every 10 Latinos over the age of 20 lives with diabetes. When left untreated, diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and blindness, among other health problems. Although family history increases the risk for diabetes, you can control this with healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

9. Latinos own nearly one in every 10 businesses across the country. Latino-owned businesses grew 47 percent to 2.3 million in comparison to the non-Latino increase of 14.5 percent between 2002 and 2007. They generated over $400 billion dollarsin 2007.

10. In addition to opening new businesses and creating new jobs, Latinos are also spending big bucks. Latinos contributed more than $1 trillion to our economy in 2010
Without a doubt, Latinos are vital to the sustainability of our country. As the youngest ethnic group in the country (median age of 27), not only are we the labor force of the future, but we are helping keep the U.S. competitive in the global market. We are creating new jobs and spending more than ever. And most importantly, we are becoming an increasingly larger voting block that can not be ignored. But it’s not enough to be a large community. We need to vote and be a powerful community!

Johanna N. Perez is an intern at Voto Latino. type='text'>COSMOPROF NORTH AMERICA 2011

INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY LINE-UP

Cosmoprof North America (CPNA) is once again demonstrating its commitment to the global beauty landscape by continuing the hugely successful International Buyer Program and Country Pavilions. The International Buyer Program serves as a liaison between international buyers and exhibitor companies.

The program allows qualified buyers from abroad to attend the show and meet exhibitors with corresponding profiles; these one-on-one meetings take place on the show floor throughout the three-day event. The buyers come to CPNA with the specific mission of finding new beauty products that they can bring into their own markets. The 13 buyers come from Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.

In addition to the International Buyer Program, participants who are available to meet with all exhibitor companies of matching profiles, there will be another delegation of foreign buyers counting more than 90 buyers from 10 countries including Australia, Benin, Canada, Congo, Guinea, Japan, Mauritania, Mexico, Senegal and Uganda. These buyers are guests invited through the USCS offices coming specifically to meet with U.S. companies exhibiting at the event.

CPNA is recognized as the elite international platform within the U.S. marketplace not only due to its high international visitor headcount, but also because of its international exhibitor presence. Aside from individual international exhibitors, there will be six Country Pavilions from Argentina, Brazil, China, Italy, Korea and Taiwan; in total there will be approximately 205 companies from abroad presenting at the event.

The Country Pavilions allow small and medium-sized companies from within select markets to participate in CPNA with the objective of obtaining direct “face time” with distributors and retailers to secure distribution in the U.S. The support and counsel of Country Pavilions organizers allow these small to medium-sized exhibiting companies to take part in an international trade show event in the U.S. and obtain an understanding of the North American marketplace. Additionally, the presence of Country Pavilion organizers, who are representatives of foreign cosmetic industry associations on the show floor, allow U.S. manufacturers interested in those particular markets to gain market intelligence. These two programs illustrate the efforts of the organizers to provide actual business opportunities that lead to new distribution for the exhibiting companies.

Argentina

The Argentinean Pavilion will feature the following exhibitors:

ACTIVE COSMETICS S.A.| Booth # A15439 / www.activecosmetic.com.ar
Capilatis S.A.| Booth # A15439 / www.capilatis.com.ar
Laboratorios Andromaco| Booth # A15439 / no website indicated
Plumari S.A.| Booth # A15439 / www.plumari.com
Saint Julien S.A.| Booth # A15439 / www.saintjulien.com.ar
Sol Pleno| Booth # 15439 / www.solpleno.com
Universo Garden Angels| Booth # A15439 / www.universogardenangels.com
SISCOM DE ARGENTINA S.A.| Booth # A15439/www.beauty.com.ar

Brazil

The Brazilian Pavilion will feature the following exhibitors:

M.CASSAB COMÉRCIO E INDÚSTRIA LTDA.| Booth # D1034 / www.nunaat.com
CADIVEU COSMÉTICOS COMÉRCIO IMPORTAÇÃO E EXPORTAÇÃO LTDA| Booth # D845
/ www.cadiveu.com
BIOCILIN INDUSTRIA DE COSMETICOS LTDA| Booth # D1052 / www.capicilin.com.br
INDUSTRIA E COMERCIO SANTA THEREZA LTDA| Booth # D853 / www.sther.com.br
AKLA INDÚSTRIA DE COSMÉTICOS LTDA.| Booth # D835 / no website indicated
Muriel do Brasil Ind. de Cosméticos Ltda.| Booth # D1044 / no website indicated
ABIHPEC| Booth # D829 / www.beautycarebrazil.org.br
Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles| Booth # D829 / www.brazilian-consulate.org/secom

Italy

The Italian Pavilion will feature the following exhibitors:

MASCARA PLUS| Booth # A15342 / www.mascaraplus.com
TECMES| Booth # C13349 / www.tecmes-italia.com
LUMSON| Booth # A15336 / www.lumson.it
SKINACTIVE PROFESSIONAL| Booth # C14350 / www.rosactive.com
CERIOTTI| Booth # C13339 / no website indicated
VITALFARCO | Booth # A15370/ www.vitalfarco.com
OYSTER COSMETICS| Booth # C14336 / www.oystercosmetics.it
POOL SERVICE| Booth # A15358 / www.mypoolservice.it
CE.ISCO | Booth # A14337 / www.ceisco.it
RCM| Booth # A14337 / www.rcmitalia.com
MTJ COSMETICS| Booth # A14377 / www.mtjcosmetics.com
GM KOSMETIK SRL| Booth # C14370 / www.junglefever.it
COSMETIC CENTER| Booth # C14344 / www.cosmeticcenter.it
KIEPE | Booth # A14359 / www.kiepe.com
WORLD PHARM RESOURCE| Booth # A15376 / www.greenenergyorganics.it
CADEY| Booth # C14359 / www.bilboacapri.com
STAB IT GAVARRY SPA| Booth # A14371 / www.lamande.it
G&P Cosmetics srl| Booth # A15348 / no website indicated
MARIO ZUNINO| Booth # C13371 / www.mariozunino.com
KAARAL | Booth # C13355 / www.kaaral.com
PROMOS| Booth # A14349 / www.promositaly.com
GAMMA PIU'| Booth # D12047 / www.gammapiu.it
HAS | Booth # D11141 / www.hsacosmetics.com

Susan G. Still, the banking and business communities still regarded the Latina entrepreneur as a novelty rather than an economic force to be reckoned with, according to Sharon Hidary, executive director of the national foundation.

"So we did the study to give voice and visibility both to the accomplishments and the challenges faced by the Latina entrepreneur," explained Hidary.

Few know more about that double-edge sword of business entrepreneurship than Amanda Moreno. Twenty-nine years old and the owner of four businesses in the heart of a revitalized urban arts district here, Moreno relishes the success of her beauty shop, coffee house . Her businesses cater to both Latinos and non-Latinos. Yet, she grimaces when recalling the struggles she's had to endure.

"It wasn't easy opening up my businesses," said Moreno. "Banks and people in general didn't take me seriously. They just thought I was weird or crazy." That lack of support prompted Moreno to use her own savings and to turn to her family for help in funding the first of her businesses. A common practice among Latina entrepreneurs--and among women in general who have difficulty getting financing.

According to the survey, 55 percent of those interviewed did not borrow any capital to start up their businesses and 23 percent said they borrowed from family members.

NLCA EDUCATES AT ISSE MIDWEST 2011 HIGHLIGHTS

Focus on the Latino professional: ISSE Long Beach, in partnership with the National Latino Cosmetology Association (NLCA), continues to focus on this fast growing market segment. We'd like to show them, through our actions and efforts, that community involvement and inspiration through local artists is so vital to the growth of a business.

We are a salon run by young, enthusiastic business professionals who have all, at some point, broken out and relocated our entire lives. We've banded together to change the industry under our fearless leader, Kelly Cardenas. With not much more than a salon, a dream, and a group of inspired and passionate 20-something year olds, we have been able to organically grow a successful business with help from our neighbors and friends we've made along the way.

The saying goes, "Its not about what you know, but who you know." However, we believe it's a little bit of both. With strong fundamentals and structured in-salon weekly education, we get the "what" out of the way so it's all about community, building relationships and making people happy.

Topics that will be covered:
-Long hair styling-Innovative haircutting based on basic structure-Simple, bold color techniques-Teamwork and community involvement in and out of the salon

Who is Beau Boncutter: Beau Boncutter has been involved in the fashion industry since he was a young man; traveling around the world representing his mothers fashion company and doing makeup for movies and fashion shows. It was his creativity and love for fashion that drew his love for the art of designing beautiful hair. While it was more of the education and show aspect of the hair industry that made him decide to go to cosmetology school, he knew that his work behind a chair would be the avenue to get him to where he really wanted to be: on a platform spreading his knowledge to others within the industry he loves. Not only has Beau become one of the top stylists within Kelly Cardenas Salon but he has also taken a comanding roll within the Kelly Cardenas Academies and traveling show team. "I love being in the salon because it's where I get to hone my skills. It's also a great place to find inspiration for many of the looks I get to teach all over the country. What other industry can provide you with the opportunity to do what you love while traveling the world as well as when you're at home? ...none" -Beau Boncutter

Who is Diana Monteleone: Diana Monteleone has had the chance to do what so many others have only dreamed of. Starting as an assistant at the age of nineteen with Kelly Cardenas Salon, Diana had a lot of dreams for her career which mirrored those of many young ambitious hairdressers: open a salon, get involved in fashion, become a platform artist and travel the world as an educator. She knew that in order to succeed in accomplishing all of her lofty aspirations, it was going to take an extensive amount of hard work and dedication. Kelly saw the desire and drive of Diana when she started with the company and at the age of twenty-two, he gave her opportunity to pack up and move to Chicago where she would be opening the newest Kelly Cardenas Salon. Now, at the young age of 24, she has grown to be one of the top stylists within the salon, has immersed herserlf within fashion shows all over the city, has traveled the country as a platform artist and has also traveled the world representing Kelly Cardenas Salon. At her young age and with such strong passion, there don't seem to be any limits on what Diana Monteleone will accomplish throughout her career.

NLCA EDUCATES At ISSE 2011 and Paul Mitchell presents Beau Boncutter and Diana Monteleone .

Kelly Cardenas Salon Chicago773.342.44741909 W. Philanthropist. Celebrity Hairstylist.

Honest, soft spoken and genuine: George Gonzalez, celebrity hairstylist and owner of George- The Salon on 23 W. Hubbard in downtown Chicago, adapts these qualities to his beauty profession to not only nurture outward beauty but to strengthen the inner spirit as well. Sitting in his chair, George’s clients experience a sense of calm and confidence. It’s clear from the moment you meet him that his goal is to help people feel better about them and he is thankful he has been provided with the gift to do just this.

It’s a gift, however, that is the result of years of training for this man who considers working with hair an art form that offers him the opportunity to learn more about himself. He is passionate in everything he does and deems it “Amazing that I get paid to do what I love.”
George has worked as a stylist for the last 19 years attending cosmetology school at the Creative Beauty Academy in northwest Indiana and apprenticing at DeMari Salon in Lansing, Illinois for Alyessa DeMari. Since then, he has worked with the PGA during three President's Cup Tournaments, cutting and styling hair for the top golfers and their wives. This included South Africa 2003, Washington, D.C. 2005, and San Francisco 2009.

In February 2008, George continued onto the next phase of his professional career by opening George- The Salon in downtown Chicago. As a hidden oasis in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, this luxurious and serene loft is the home of 8 stations featuring the city’s top cutters, stylists, and colorists who believe in continued personal and professional growth as well as providing the latest in education, services, and techniques.

George also freelances at one of the entertainment industry’s most influential locations, the Spa at Harpo. With this amazing opportunity in hand, George works with celebrities and his salon has worked on makeover segments for the The Oprah Winfrey Show.

George’s passion for helping people feel better about themselves still remains at the forefront of his career due to the vast pro-bono work he offers to victims of domestic violence. Driven by his personal experience, he’s made a commitment to help these women regain their emotional and physical confidence. Providing free services - as well as engaging his entire staff in his dedication to this good work - is just one way he is fulfilling what he believes is his destiny. George is also developing a hair product line that will benefit organizations helping those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. The On Your Feet Foundation, Between Friends and other small shelters for victims of domestic violence are among the organizations George supports.
“Having a business gives me a platform to do what I feel is necessary in order to give back to my community,” explains Gonzalez. “George - The Salon's main focus is on helping victims of domestic violence regain self-esteem. I know first-hand what domestic violence does to a woman's sense of self. As a child, I witnessed my mother abused by my former step-father and I watched her struggle with her own sense of worth. Whether a woman's self-esteem is damaged due to another person or a difficult situation, I find it is important to support organizations that can provide the resources they need to improve their lives.”
www.georgethesalon.com

NLCA EDUCATES At ISSE 2011

The Salon Industry – An Exciting, Glamorous Career by Stephanie Ramirez
Professional Program Insurance Brokers
NLCA
Saturday 01/29/2011 1:30PM - 3:00PM Room Arena A5
Description: In this class you will learn about the exciting and glamorous careers in the beauty industry as well as the behind the scenes look at what it takes to start up your own business. The U.S. Department of Commerce has granted Trade Fair Certification
to SoGeCos of Milan, Italy, to organize the official U.S. Pavilion at Cosmoprof Asia 2010, Hong Kong,
November 10-12, 2010. Renowned as the largest international beauty showcase in the Asia Pacific region, the
15th edition of the show will be held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The themes include
professional beauty salon and spa products and equipment; hair products, equipment and salon furnishings;
perfumery, cosmetics and toiletries; contract manufacturing and private label; raw materials, and packaging and
machinery.
2009 Results: Cosmoprof Asia 2009 featured 1,412 exhibitors from 39 countries and regions, 40,000 visitors
from over 100 countries, and 18 national and group pavilions, including the U.S. Pavilion, which had 43
exhibitors. Among the visitors, there were top buyers from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.
Cosmoprof Asia is organized by Cosmoprof Asia Ltd, while the U.S. Pavilion at the show is organized by
SoGeCos Americas in the U.S. The event has the support of the DOC’s staff in both the United States and
Hong Kong. U.S. Commercial Service Hong Kong staff promotes the U.S. Pavilion before the show under the
“Asia Now” program and brings in scores of potential buyers from other countries in the region. The staff also
counsels U.S. exhibitors on site, as well as enlists regional CS trade specialists to meet with U.S. companies.
By supporting this event, the DOC recognizes the capability and exhibition experience of the organizer of the
U.S. Pavilion, SoGeCos, and the potential of this market for U.S. industry exports. Companies participating in
the U.S. Pavilion are provided with an excellent venue to establish or expand overseas distribution, generate
sales leads, identify licensing and joint venture partners, find new customers, meet with existing clients,
introduce new products, assess the needs of the Hong Kong and Pacific Rim market, and evaluate competitors.
The DOC’s Trade Fair Certification (TFC) Program is a cooperative arrangement between private sector
show organizers and the U.S. Government. The TFC Program seeks to broaden the base of U.S. exporters,
particularly new-to-export and new-to-market companies, by introducing them to key trade fairs where they can
meet their export objectives.
For additional information about attending or exhibiting at Cosmoprof Asia, contact Alessandra Allegri of
Sogecos in Milan at alessandra.allegri@cosmoprof.it, phone 39-02-454708-216, or go to the official show
website at www.cosmoprof-asia.com.
For more information about the Trade Fair Certification Program, contact Ed Kimmel

Outstanding Hispanic: Raul Magdaleno

Raul Magdaleno is an extraordinary young Latino who overcame extreme adversity in order to become the first member of his family to graduate from high school and college.
Born in Mexico City, Raul immigrated to the United States, arriving in Dallas, Texas, at the age of two. By the time Raul was seven years old, his father had died and all of his brothers were in prison. Raul realized he had to be a leader in his family and help provide for his disabled sister and single mother.
Raul’s mother remarried a man who was abusive and they eventually moved to a domestic violence shelter when Raul was 13. It was at this point that Raul says his life changed for the better. Moving out of an abusive home and into the homeless shelter instilled in him an unwavering sense of faith, education, and service to his community.
At that point, Raul Magdaleno began volunteering in his community at the age of 13, mentoring young children at a local learning center. Barely a teenager himself, he worked tirelessly to help women and children who were victims of domestic abuse, just like his family was. Additionally, he worked with Dallas police in a youth program, and promoted education at elementary schools. In 2002, as a result of his compassionate service to his community, he received the US Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’s highest civilian service award, for his efforts to help the victims of domestic violence.
By working hard in the classroom, excelling in school and donating his time and efforts to the community around him, Raul Magdaleno has become an exemplary role model for the Hispanic Community.
"The reason our kids are failing is because no one has ever taught them to dream bigger. Their dreams are limited to their environment. The biggest challenge is to teach Latinos who are part of low socio-economic communities the possibilities of what the world has to offer them. We have to raise our expectations of the Latino students because if we raise it they will exceed their current performance."
"I really think that part of the solution is getting students involved in tackling the problem. A great example of this is a workshop we held for high school students recently. The students were pin pointing the biggest issues that were negatively affecting their academic performance, teen pregnancy for example, and coming up with solutions on their own. Gaining the students input and perspective is really the key to solving these sorts of problems."
It is because of those accomplishments that we recognize Raul Magdaleno as an Outstanding Hispanic.

Beauty Changes Lives Preview DVD

The Professional Beauty Association’s Salon & Spa Performance Index Records First Decline in Third Quarter 2010

Phoenix, AZ (November 09, 2010) – The Professional Beauty Association’s (PBA) Salon & Spa Performance Index (SSPI) recorded a modest decline of 0.3 percent for the third quarter of 2010 to stand at 103.3. The SSPI is a quarterly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. salon/spa industry. Following a record high in the second quarter of 2010 at 103.6, the SSPI remains in positive territory and is up 1.4 percent year-over-year. Softer retail sales and customer traffic levels in the third quarter are attributed to the decline, a first for the Index.
“Even with a slight decline in the Salon & Spa Performance Index, year-over-year results continue to reflect positive growth in the beauty industry,” said Steve Sleeper, Executive Director for the Professional Beauty Association. “The beauty industry is an integral part of the broader economy and continues to demonstrate its resiliency as economic conditions remain uncertain.”
The SSPI is based on the responses to PBA’s “Salon & Spa Industry Tracking Survey” which is fielded quarterly among salon/spa owners nationwide on a variety of indicators. It is constructed so that the health of the salon/spa industry is measured in relation to a steady-state level of 100. Index values above 100 indicate that key industry indicators are in a period of expansion, while index values below 100 represent a period of contraction. The Index consists of two components – the Current Situation Index and the Expectations Index.
The Current Situation Index, which measures current trends in five industry indicators (service sales, retail sales, customer traffic, employees/hours, and capital expenditures), stood at 101.3 in the third quarter – down .9 percent from its second quarter level. A broad-based decline was seen in each of the five indicators, with service and retail sales registering the sharpest declines. Changes in consumer routines due to the summer holiday season that encompasses the third quarter may have had a general impact, however haircuts, coloring, and depletion of styling products should eventually bring consumers back to their normal service and spending levels. Overall the Current Situation Index remains above 100 and in the range of expansion.
The Expectations Index, which measures salon/spa owners’ six month outlook, considers the following five industry indicators: service sales, retail sales, employees and hours, capital expenditures, and business conditions. With a positive increase of 0.2 percent from the second quarter, salon/spa owners showed slightly more optimism about overall industry growth and future economic conditions. Additionally, a majority of salon/spa owners indicated they expect to expand staffing levels in the months ahead.
Salon/spa owners also became more confident in the direction of the overall economy, after their outlook deteriorated significantly in the second quarter. Consumers have become more knowledgeable and well travelled, and this in turn has increased demand for these products.

Growing ‘herbal’ market trend
In addition, a new concept of ‘Herbal Medicine’ is paving its way to the skin care industry, according to the RNCOS report. It says personal care companies are globally exploring the markets to tap into the growth potential of this segment.
Regulatory bodies are also ensuring that consumers have full knowledge about the ingredients of products and thus focusing on labeling.

LATIN AMERICAN POISED FOR BEAUTY GROWTH

By Michael Stones
30-Sep-2010

Latin American countries, particularly Brazil and Mexico, are predicted to show stellar growth in the beauty and personal care market over the next five years, according to a conference at the HBA Global Expo in New York.
"The Latin American market for beauty and personal care products, lead by Brazil, already nearly matches the US market and has huge growth potential," Christian Bardin, president of cosmetics consultancy CBA Associates told the conference.
Total sales of beauty and personal care products in Latin Americareached US$53.6bn last year compared to $58.8bn in the US, according to Euromonitor statistics. But by 2014, Latin American sales are predicted to reach $80.3bn compared with sales of $62.3bn north of the Rio Grande river.
Health care products
Predominant in the region's market is Brazil which now accounts for the globe's third largest sales of beauty and healthcare products after the United States and Japan.
Mexico is the area's second largest market with sales expected to rise from $7.9bn last year to $49.3bn within four years. But market growth will depend upon remedying the inequality of income distribution and improving the nation's infrastructure and credit availability, said Bardin.
Latin America's top three beauty and personal care categories are hair care, fragrances and skin care. Hair care product sales are expected to rise from $11.3bn last year to $15.8bn in 2014.
Fragrances and skin care will increase from $8.5bn and $7.4bn last year to $13.8bn and $11.5bn respectively within the next four years.
Men's grooming is another key category in this market with sales exceeding color cosmetics, deoderants, bath and shower, body care and sun care.

Natural resources
Rich in natural resources, it is no surprise that analysts are hailing the Latin American decade, said Bardin. "Just look at where the natural resources are - that will tell you which markets will grow," he added.
Meanwhile, Monica Gregori, marketing director of Brazil's Natura Cosmetics highlighted the value of sales of cosmetic products to Brazilian women. The nation's 95m women account for 50.9 per cent of the population, said Gregori. "Women account for 43 per cent of Brazil's economically active population and 70 per cent are prone to invest in products designed to make them feel good and look beautiful."
Female spending power reached $450bn last year of which $19bn was spent on beauty services and cosmetics.
"Brazil is under the spotlight and attracting international brands. Everybody is trying to get a piece of that market," concluded Gregori.
Latin America Key Facts
* Total population 580m across 23 countries.
* Median age below 30.
* Average economic growth rate 5.5 per cent.
* 15 per cent of global oil resources.
* 30 per cent of global fresh water.
Source: CBA Associates

NLCA - ISSE 2010 Post Show Release

NLCA - ISSE 2010 Post Show Release
40,000 Beauty Professional's Set Record Attendance at the 2010 International Salon & Spa Expo

NLCA headquarters, Las Vegas, NV. Escapes into fantasy.
THE INSPIRATION
SURREAL
In this time of economic crisis the palette of the season was primarily monochromatic or neutral in order to provide longevity of fashion investment.
Consumers’ sub-conscious reaction to negative economy was to seek to escape and to embrace a new sense of creative boldness and fantasy.
Surrealism is an artistic movement that rejects reality and escapes into fantasy ... like the fearless experimentation expressed in the Surreal photography of Manray.
This season, the fashion designers turned to surrealism to counter the monochromatic palette and used amazingly creative new shapes and materials...abandoning consensus and eluding codes.
RED
As a complementary trend to surrealism was the vivid use of ReD to add color energy amid the predominantly monochromatic or neutral clothing palettes. Red was used for color trim, in accessories...in make up, from the surreal red lips of Alexander McQueen to the beautiful ruby-red lips of Armani...and of course, in hair. notice the number of vibrant red-haired models on the runways this season!
SURREALISM ON RUNWAYS
Key shapes & Color trend of the season
INVERT
Inverting angles... angular shoulders... pencil-thin pants...New materials or foldings or other avant guard effects for surreal shapes.
The Cut: For the confident woman…a strong cut without any compromise. The flowing lines give constant movement for a tongue-in-cheek, playfully confident attitude.
The Color: The combination of red and blonde, through triangular sections inspired by key shape of the dress, creates a sharp and strong effect.

GATHERExaggerated fullness.... mounds of material...Short full dress... Fantastically full sleeves.
The Cut: A wide bold fringe for a sophisticated look… perfect for even the most elegant woman.
The Color: Wide rounded sections with pencil slim ends at the front. Red is the protagonist in this ultra-exciting color proposal. A unique expression of the power of red achieved by showing 3 different levels of intensity.
TWISTExperimentation...3D creations...rounded shapes...coiling and twisting effects around the body.
The Cut: Short cut for a young and cool effect…the irregular line of the perimeter gives a shattered effect for a completely new look.
The Color: A sinuous and rounded section twists around the head for a daringly experimental color effect. Additionally, both parties seek to raise awareness regarding the purchasing power the Latino market represents to the beauty industry along with the products and services they desire. As part of this strategic partnership, NLCA will provide additional support promoting the International Salon & Spa Expo (ISSE is a production of PBA) to its members and play a larger role as a featured presenter at ISSE’s Latino Fashion Theater. With ISSE being held in Long Beach, CA, and as the West Coast’s largest beauty event, it is a natural fit to tap into Southern California’s diverse Latino community to be a part of the show.

“There is a lack of outreach in our industry for education and training for the Latino professional. NLCA provides an outreach to the community on behalf of the PBA.
Twenty-nine years old and the owner of four businesses in the heart of a revitalized urban arts district here, Moreno relishes the success of her western wear store, beauty shop, coffee house and porcelain doll boutique. Her businesses cater to both Latinos and non-Latinos. Yet, she grimaces when recalling the struggles she's had to endure.
"It wasn't easy opening up my businesses," said Moreno. "Banks and people in general didn't take me seriously. They just thought I was weird or crazy."
That lack of support prompted Moreno to use her own savings and to turn to her family for help in funding the first of her businesses. A common practice among Latina entrepreneurs--and among women in general who have difficulty getting financing.
According to the survey, 55 percent of those interviewed did not borrow any capital to start up their businesses and 23 percent said they borrowed from family members.

LATINA SALONS WEATHER RECESSION BEAUTIFULLY

Latina beauty salons throughout the U.S. are providing an employment lifeline to a group of female workers who have been badly hurt by the recession. One owner in Queens, N.Y., hopes to add English classes to her new cosmology school.
NEW YORK (WOMENSENEWS)--Here in Woodside, Queens, Carmen Ledesma employs nine women in her Parisien Beauty Salon, a business she started 16 years ago on Roosevelt Avenue after moving to the United States from Paraguay.
For a mother of three with limited English skills, it turned out to be a good way to make an income, something the New York mayor's office noted in early October at a press conference about the city's efforts to support immigrant-owned businesses in New York, which hosts an estimated 130,000 Latino-owned businesses.
At the City University of New York's Graduate Center, city officials asked Ledesma to precede Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the press conference's speaker lineup to describe how she expanded her business, going from an employee at one salon to starting her own small salon. She has since added a spa and opened a cosmology school, a storefront with large glass windows in a multistory building, which she created with help from a government-supported small business initiative.
"Since I opened the door to my salon, many immigrant women have seen that they can open their own business," said Ledesma. "I have achieved one of my dreams, and sent three children to college."
The Center for Women's Business Research, based in McLean, Va., says Latinas owned over 700,00 businesses nationwide in 2007 and generated about $46 billion in sales. Between 1993 and 2006, the number of Latina-owned businesses more than doubled.
Overall, female-owned companies employ 16 percent of the U.S. work force and contribute $3 trillion to the almost $14 trillion U.S. economy, according to the center.
Small Business Aid Benefits Women
"I don't know the statistics, but I would suspect that you would be shocked by how many immigrants' small businesses are run by women," Bloomberg said at the press conference in response to a question by Women's eNews. "If you help out small businesses, you will do an awful lot for women. We saw that with Carmen and her beauty salon."
The Latino work force has been badly hurt by the recession, according to a February 2009 report by the Washington-based Pew Hispanic Center. Between 2007 and 2008, the jobless rate for immigrant Latinos rose to 8 percent from around 5 percent and for U.S.-born Latinos it rose to 9.5 percent from 6.7 percent.
A slowdown in the construction industry has caused much grief for Latino households. In Woodside, along Roosevelt Avenue, near Ledesma's salon, day laborers who used to find work readily in the mornings by waiting near the subway can now go weeks without a day of construction or restaurant work, according to interviews by Women's eNews.
Even before the recession, two years ago, Latinas were still twice as likely as non-Hispanic women to live in poverty, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.
At this same time, however, the fastest growing segment in small businesses are Latina-owned companies, according to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a nongovernmental organization based in Washington, D.C.
Among these small businesses, beauty salons have proven resilient because they are so popular in many Latino communities, often acting as a social hub.
Latinas are more likely than any other social group in the United States to visit hair salons and cosmetic counters, and spend more on cosmetic products overall than other groups of women, according to Yankelovich Partners, a consumer research company in Chapel Hill, N.C.

SCHOOLS HELPS OTHER LATINAS

Ledesma's business is small, earning about a $100,000 a year, and she receives about 20 customers daily.
In a phone interview, she said that she hopes her cosmetology school can help other Latinas get a foothold in the business world by starting their own salons in the city.
"I'm really proud to open a school, and I hope that I can help other women start their own projects and businesses," she said.

REAL LOVE DOES'NT HURT

Beauty salons are intimate gathering places where women chat, confide and nourish more than hair and nails. Now, some are playing potentially life-saving roles in a network helping battered women take care of beauty and bruises, body and soul.
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The next time you go in for a little pampering at the beauty salon in the nation's capital, your stylist may slip you something that could save your life as well as your cuticles.
Cleverly concealed inside a slick, high-fashion lipstick case, a rolled-up bookmark asks, "Are you in an abusive relationship?" and offers a quiz to help women recognize whether they are victims of domestic violence. A lovely lavender nail file reads "Real Love Doesn't Hurt" and provides a hotline number for a women's shelter.
This is the latest strategy to get information about domestic violence and potential assistance into the hands of the women who need it most--without adding to their endangerment.
"When women are in an abusive relationship and they pick up information about domestic violence, they're putting themselves in danger because if their abusers see it they'll get in trouble," explains Suzanne Marcus, founder of the Washington, D.C., shelter, My Sister's Place.
After realizing that beauty salons play a unique role in women's lives, Marcus launched her unusual outreach program to involve beauty salons in the fight against battering--which is the leading cause of injury among women. Now, 65 salons in the Washington area are distributing nail files and lipstick cases with messages in English and Spanish.
"A lot of salons are really community places, where women will come and spend up to eight hours if they're getting braids or something else, and stylists say women really open up to them," she said, adding with a laugh, "I know I do."
850,000 Women Report Domestic Violence Each Year
About a million Americans reported they were victims of some form of domestic violence every year, 85 percent of them women, according to Justice Department statistics. Experts estimated that only about half of the attacks are reported. Intimate partner attacks made up 22 percent of violent crimes against women from 1993 to 1998, the last reporting period.
Troops of "outreach volunteers" have visited about 65 salons in the Washington area to talk to stylists about identifying signs of abuse. Hair stylists, manicurists and massage therapists can spot bruises, for example, and supply women with information on getting help.
A cleverly designed lavender flier entitled, "Take Care of Your Body" on one side offers tips on nail care and relaxation techniques. The reverse side urges, "Take Care of Your Soul," with what looks like a page ripped out of a women's magazine providing a quiz, "Is Your Love Life Healthy?"
Questions include "Do you find yourself keeping details of your relationship from your family?" to "Does your partner shove you, slap you, or hit you?" It provides a scale to determine whether a woman needs help and then offers about 20 hotline telephone numbers.
"We figured women would be more likely to pick that up than something more in-your-face," says Marcus.
Warning on a Nail File: Real Love Doesn't Hurt
The stealthy slip inside the lipstick is more direct, providing practical tips on how to leave a relationship, such as collecting important papers, leaving a false trail and keeping a copy of any restraining orders with you at all times.
"Nail files and the lipsticks--men are just not going to touch them," explains Marcus.
MAC donated 2,000 empty, high-end lipstick cases to the cause and another big-name line, Aveda, has joined the fight.
Aveda area manager Holly Landau said she just had to order more materials from My Sister's Place for her two Virginia stores in Tyson's Corners and Pentagon City.
"All of them are just flying out the door," said Landau, who has placed them in plain sight in the salons but also in the restroom, where they deplete more rapidly. "We've noticed the pile going down and that's how we know it's effective. People have been taking them on their own time and in private," she said.
Marcus acknowledged that it was difficult to gauge how well her program is doing, though she said there has clearly been a surge in calls since its inception a year ago.
One survivor of several severely abusive relationships says such a program could have spared her years of trauma.<div in their ability to start and run businesses, a trend that will only increase, according to experts taking part in Denver at the first Latina Summit of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "Latin women are leading small-business growth in this country. This amazing information is important in itself, but it's even more important taking into account the economic problems the country's entire business community has faced in recent years," Elizabeth Vasquez Gallagher, the vice president of the USHCC, said Thursday. Businesses owned by Hispanic women have grown almost 125 percent in the last decade, Vasquez Gallagher said, citing a report by the Center for Women's Business Research. In fact, more than a third of Hispanic businesses are currently run by women. And according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from the year 2000 to 2007 the number of Hispanic women in high-level business and professional positions grew between 20 and 23 percent. "The tremendous success and growth of Hispanic business in this country is inspiring. We can learn much from this success," David Lizarraga, chairman of the USHCC board, said. In 2002, there were 1.6 million Hispanic non-farm businesses generating annual revenues over $220 million.
"The tremendous success and growth of Hispanic business in this country is inspiring. We can learn much from this success," David Lizarraga, chairman of the USHCC board, said. In 2002, there were 1.6 million Hispanic non-farm businesses generating annual revenues over $220 million. At present it is estimated that there are 2.5 million Hispanic businesses, of which close to 750,000 are run by women, with total revenues of more than $46 billion per year. Among Hispanic businesswomen, 22 percent are involved in health or social services, 19 percent in service industries, 17 percent in administration and 11 percent in sales, while the rest are divided among professional and scientific enterprises along with other businesses. In comparison, 21 percent of Hispanic men's businesses are in construction, 14 percent in services, 11 percent in transportation and another 11 percent in administration. For Linda Alvarado, president and general manager of Denver-based Alvarado Construction and the first Hispanic woman to own a Major League Baseball team, the Colorado Rockies, "Hispanic women are changing the labor force, because we're no longer just consumers but now we're also leaders." When the Cuban-born Roberto Goizueta was promoted to the helm of the world's best-known brand, it was an anomaly that made headlines as much for his ethnicity as for his business acumen.
Most Latino executives up to that point had been ``token Hispanics'' who managed after-thought multicultural divisions with tiny budgets. Although the landscape of U.S. Hispanic CEOs today is still significantly under-representative when compared to Hispanics' percentage of the total population, things are shifting in the right direction.
Hispanics can, and should, take comfort that the momentum is on our side, as companies are investing more heavily in the Latin marketplace, and Latinos are being promoted to the upper echelon of virtually every facet of American life.
The most recent Commerce Secretary under President Bush, Carlos Gutierrez, came to his government post as the former global CEO of Kellogg. Antonio Perez, a Spaniard, is currently chairman and CEO of Eastman Kodak. Less than two years ago, George Chavel was named president and CEO of Sodexo (U.S. operations), a $7.3-billion company with 120,000 employees and 10 million customers. What do all of these appointments have in common? In a way, they are ``post-ethnic.'' These individuals rose to the top due to their unique skill sets, rather than their country of origin.
The political realm is experiencing a similar paradigm shift. A recent example is Sonia Sotomayor, the Supreme Court nominee whose parents hail from Puerto Rico. Hispanics from either political party should appreciate that both the praise and criticism bestowed upon Sotomayor thus far has been relatively fair in nature, delving deeply into her controversial rulings and extensive academic track record. Even her rulings that deal with affirmative action and gender have been largely handled in the mainstream media with respect and deference to her independent intellect, rather than merely a racial stereotype born from her heritage.
The White House is following suit. As pointed out in a June 15 Houston Chronicle article by Richard Dunham, President Obama has appointed many more Hispanics to his administration than any previous president in American history, serving as a testament to the increasing clout of the nation's largest minority group. Latinos make up 11 percent of Obama's first 300 nominees for senior administration positions that require Senate confirmation.
The realm of marketing and outreach to the Hispanic community has also experienced a boom of late.
The previous modus operandi for companies entailed not only token Hispanic executives, but also a token Hispanic marketing strategy, which conducted the bare minimum outreach to appease interest groups. What major companies have now begun to realize is that they can actually make money by aggressively targeting Hispanics.
As U.S. general market ad spending has ground to a halt in the past year, the $4 billion Hispanic ad market continues to show respectable gains. In 2008, spending on Spanish-language TV grew by 4.4 percent, and Spanish-language magazines surged by 14.2 percent, while the U.S. media market as a whole grew by just 0.6 percent, according to TNS Media Intelligence. The top 10 Hispanic advertisers spent $1.94 billion in 2008, including the likes of classic American companies such as Procter & Gamble, McDonald's, AT&T and Johnson & Johnson.
With these trends towards breaking down barriers and charting new courses, it is ideal timing for all companies and people to reconsider their preconceived notions of the Latin marketplace.
There are no longer ``Hispanic products'' any more than there are ``Hispanic executives'' or ``Hispanic politicians.'' There are ways of communicating with the Hispanic market (in-language and with cultural relevance), just like there are good or bad executives who happen to be Hispanic.
We appear to be in the early stages of a trend leading toward a more-equitable business and political climate. Eventually, the number of Hispanics in corporate America, Latino elected officials, and marketing dollars invested toward this community should be in lockstep with the Latino percentage of total population. At that point, we can finally be rid of all the tokens.
Mike Valdés-Fauli is managing director of The Jeffrey Group.

PBA and NCA Agree to Proposed Merger

Posted: August 6, 2009
The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA) have anounced that the two organizations have signed an agreement to effect a proposed merger. The merger will combine the best practices and leverage the complementary strengths, assets and member benefits of each group to improve all sectors of the professional beauty industry. The agreement is effective immediately. Long-range, the proposed merger will have NCA join the PBA's three existing company-based membership sections in its headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ, as a fourth "NCA" membership section, based on NCA's existing individual membership criteria.
To benefit their combined memberships in a greater capacity, PBA and NCA will work as partners to conduct more comprehensive research into the industry's best practices and results, as well as combine government relations and lobbying efforts for the benefit of the entire industry. In addition, members of each group will share in the benefits the other enjoys, as appropriate, including free admission to major industry events.
"In today's business environment, strategic alliances are a common best practice that enables groups to combine efforts and leverage the strengths of each to maximize results. The NCA and PBA forming this strategic alliance was a natural evolution and obvious opportunity for both of us, as well as for the industry at large, because we share the goal or working tirelessly toward the success of our members who reresent all facets of the industry. That is especially true in the face of rising costs and shrinking sponsorship dollars," says Steve Sleeper, executive director of the PBA.
"Represening all licensed professionals, future professionals and salon owners, the NCA has by far the largest and most diverse membership of an industry association, while the PBA has phenomenal show and event properties and success from Cosmoprof North America to the North American Hairstyling Awards," says Gordon Miller, executive director of the NCA. "What's most important is that we both have longstanding shared values of doing good work on behalf of the industry and all who support the highest aspirations of salon owners, professionals and future professionals. We are delighted to join forces with such a prestigious partner."
The Professional Beauty Association is made up of salons and spas, distributors and manufacturers dedicated to improving their individual businesses and the industry as a whole. If Americans with good ideas can work hard, put their plan to the test, and succeed, the American economy will continue to create jobs and lead the world in innovation and productivity. During National Small Business Week, we honor the entrepreneurs and small business owners who are the engine of our economy. Their ingenuity and hard work are critical to our Nation's prosperity.Small businesses are the lifeblood of cities and towns across the country. Over the last decade, small businesses created 70 percent of new jobs, and they are responsible for half of all jobs in the private sector. They also help enhance the lives of our citizens by improving our quality of life and creating personal wealth. Small businesses will lead the way to prosperity, particularly in today's challenging economic environment. My Administration is committed to economic policies that encourage enterprise and make America the best place in the world to do business. To support the free flow of credit, I have worked to increase loan guarantees, reduce borrowing fees, quicken loan processing, and unlock the secondary markets that support small business lending, among other measures. I also support tax policies that promote investment in small businesses, as well as health care reform that will help these businesses provide more workers with quality health care services. Our Nation's success depends on America's small businesses and entrepreneurs. Their contributions are necessary to rebuild our economy so that it once again offers the opportunity to succeed to all who seek it. This week we thank small business owners, entrepreneurs, and employees for helping America achieve that promise.NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 17 through May 23, 2009, as National Small BusinessWeek. I call upon Government officials, industry leaders, and advocates across the Nation to encourage our citizens to celebrate the achievements of small business owners and encourage the creation of new businesses.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.
BARACK OBAMA

Brazilian Wax Ban in NJ? Jaira's Salon

Jaira's salon appeared on the channel 12 news at 10 pm tonight, March 19th, 2009 to voice their opinion on the Ban on Brazilian Wax. Please join us in the fight to legalize Brazilian waxing by going on www.brazilianbikiniwax.org and following the instructions on the page. ...

A few pesky hairs still need to be plucked before the Brazilian wax is clean of controversy in the Garden State, a New Jersey salon-owners' group said yesterday.
Amid green and yellow balloons and signs emblazoned with the motto "Legalize Brazilian Waxing," about two dozen women and a few men gathered in Jaira's Salon in Middlesex County last night to discuss unfinished business in the waxing saga.
"The ban is not lifted. It's not off," said Rosemary Weiner, chairwoman of the Association of Salon and Spa Professionals in New Jersey (ASSPNJ). "It's the end of the story, unless we do something."
The Daily News reported March 13 that the state Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling had proposed to ban genital waxing in New Jersey's spas and salons. The board claimed the procedure was already illegal but never spelled out in the regulations.
On Friday, reacting to growing dissent from salon owners and customers, New Jersey Consumer Affairs Director David Szuchman rejected the board's proposal and asked it "to begin an immediate review of the training necessary to safely provide this service, and to establish appropriate protocols and safeguards."
Szuchman also recommended that the board not enforce the law banning Brazilian waxes. That's great, Weiner said, but unless genital, back and chest waxing are added to the law as a permitted procedure before April 25, salons will be liable regardless of Szuchman's stance.
"It's still illegal until the law is changed," Weiner said. "You will not be covered if a claim arises."
New Jersey statutes allow waxing of the face, neck, arms, legs and abdomen, making waxing of any other body part illegal. The 200-member ASSPNJ sent the board a position paper suggesting how statutes should be tweaked to include Brazilian, back and chest waxing.
The board read that paper earlier this month and rejected the association's position and planned to ban genital waxing when the new legislation takes effect April 25. The board cited public safety for the ban, saying that two women injured by Brazilian waxes had come forward with complaints. One of them filed a lawsuit.
Feuza Reis, director of marketing at Jaira's Salon, urged the small crowd to visit www. brazilianbikiniwax.org to sign and send petitions to the state. The cosmetology board meets in Newark on April 14.
Umbelina Santos, president of the Brazilian American United Association in Newark, said North Jersey's Brazilian community is in an uproar over the issue.
"The waxing started in Brazil," she told the crowd, in Portuguese. "Men and women both get waxed. We cannot let people make a negative interpretation."
Meanwhile yesterday, the animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced it would put up a billboard in New Jersey featuring a bikini line that clearly hasn't seen wax or scissors in months.
The billboard's proposed slogan - "Fur Trim. Unattractive." - is meant to remind New Jersey residents and lawmakers "that fur-related hazards aren't restricted to personal grooming," PETA said in a news release.
PETA believes the ban should instead be placed on clothing and accessories made with fur.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nlcamerican.blogspot.com/2009/03/brazilian-wax-ban-in-nj-jairas-salon.html' title='Brazilian Wax Ban in NJ? In 2009 the focus will no longer just being about who is green or all natural, but about specific ingredients and their benefits. Pierce Mattie (www.piercemattie.com) is known for forecasting trends in the beauty industry, and has this season has helped us out by forecasting the top 10 ingredients that consumers will hear more about in 2009.

Argan Oil: This incredible skin care miracle, known for being one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin E with 80% essential fatty acids, has been a beauty secret of Moroccan women for centuries. It can be dually used on skin and in hair for its high level of antioxidants and ability to replenish hair and skin’s natural moisture.
Acai: Sometimes referred to as “The Fountain of Youth,” this Brazilian berry contains antioxidants, amino acids, essential omegas, fibers and protein that positions itself as a formidable fighter in anti-aging products. Acai can be found across the board in skin care, cosmetics and hair care products.

Goji Berries: This nutrient-rich berry, well known as Wolfberries in the Himalayas, has often been called a “super food” due to its abilities to fight free radicals and boost the immune system. While there are no inherent benefits of Goji in fragrance, that hasn’t stopped perfumers from including this sweet yet tart scent into their perfumes.
Baobab: Rich in riboflavin, niacin and vitamins C, A, D and E, baobab has incredible anti-aging properties although you won’t just find it in creams and moisturizers, but also in exfoliating scrubs and hair care.

Acerola: Ingredients high in Vitamin C, like acerola, are being used more often due to their ability to even out skin tone and brighten complexion. Skin care brands will be using acerola more to target those who have issues with skin redness and inflammation.

Blueberry: Chock full of amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, blueberries are another super food that will be used to fight aging in beauty products. Also known as a “super fruit,” blueberries have long been known for its ability to revitalize the skin; it was just a matter of time before beauty brands began to incorporate it more into their skin care products.
Probiotics: Last year Pierce Mattie PR termed probiotics a “buzzword” among beauty brands, but now those brands are delivering more than just buzz with this sister category to Cosmeceuticals and Nutraceuticals. Probiotic skin care will be branded as another “clinical-like” line of products, which beauty consumers tend to lean towards as science-based.

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3: This Cosmeceutical that is becoming found more often in anti-aging products to fight fine lines and wrinkles will be even more prevalent in 2009. Products that contain Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3 will be branded as a temporary alternative to cosmetic procedures.

Myrrh: With the increasing popularity of Ayurveda in the Unites States, this ancient ingredient is also resurging in perfumes and skin care products. The rich royal resin with the slight vanilla fragrance so popular in incense also stimulates circulation and has lifting effects.

Turmeric: A highly regarded ingredient in India, Turmeric is widely known for its medicinal properties. Turmeric will be found in acne-related creams and lotions, as it is an antiseptic and can aid in preventing and removing blemishes. It will also be found in hair removal products as well as in the formulation of sunscreen in more natural products as well

How your salon's location affects your business

Ever thought about how your salon’s location might affect your business?
This question may not be something that you have ever considered. You have three possibilities from which to choose. You positioning means you are one of the following:
1. A destination salon
2. A walk by/drive by salon
3. A shopping centre salon
To help you to understand the one that that you are, the characteristics of each can broadly be describes as follows:
1. Destination salon
Low traffic flow past your door
Lower rent
Clients come to your location just to see you
Profile of a destination salon
Your salon will usually be located either totally as a stand-alone salon, maybe not at ground level, or you may have a small number of other traders around you. You may have the luxury of a larger floor area. Parking is often very convenient. Most clients will be by appointment. You will have the flexibility of trading hours that suit you and your clients. Clients can sneak from the car to the salon without needing to be as dressed up or made up, as they would have to be for a high traffic salon visit.
2. Walk by/drive by salon
Strong traffic flow that walks or drives by
Medium rent
Clients need to be attracted to you
Profile of a walk by/drive by salon
Your salon will usually be on a busy road, possibly in a strip shopping area with good drive by traffic that means you will have good visual exposure. You also have quite good walk by traffic. That is also good visual positioning. The difference between you and a shopping centre is that people are not necessarily shopping as they are passing you by and you need to make sure that you attract them to your salon .You will get some walk in clients but repeat business and referrals will form a large part of your business.
3. Shopping Centre Salon
Strong walk by traffic flow
High rent
Prospective clients are plentiful but you need to get them into your salon
Profile of a shopping centre salon
You will be paying high rent and the shopping centre should, for that premium rent, create traffic flow for you. They will bring clients into the centre. You need to get them into your salon. Image is very important and must reflect the market you want to cater to, as you are very much on display. Productivity management is very important to get right.
There is no right or wrong, good or better type of salon. All can be successful. It is important to recognise where you fit so you can make the necessary management decisions to do the right things in your particular sector.
Some of a things you need to get right
Destination Salon
Clients will choose to come to you, out there all on your lonesome, because they love what you do, so you absolutely must get it all right. The quality of your hairdressing, the level of service, the development of the relationship between you and your client
Every visit must be an experience filled with points of difference. What exactly is a point of difference?
A point of difference is something that the client gets, that they don’t expect to get, that they remember after they have left the salon.
Examples of some point of difference that work well are:
Refreshment menu and how you present your refreshments
Dedicated consultation area in the salon
Hand massage during the service
The shampoo is made an experience to be remembered
Follow up calls for new clients or a client who has a changed look
The service of re-booking is a must in all salons, but it becomes absolutely critical in a destination salon. You don’t get walk in clients so you must invite the client to return and make sure they return when they should, not when they get around to it. Always confirm all re-bookings. It is part of the service
A destination salon marketing plan
Every salon should have a 12-month marketing plan and in a destination salon your focus would be equally on getting new clients in, getting existing clients to return and encouraging existing clients to extend the range of services and products they have.
Empathy marketing works well in this type of salon. That is focusing on developing the relationship with your clients.
Some examples that work are:
New client packs
Link your loyalty programme to VIP or club marketing
Referrals from existing clients with rewards
Using your data base to thank and give clients a reason to return
Theme days or weeks that show you are fun and different e.g. Xmas in July
Walk By/Drive By Salon
You also need to make sure that the quality of everything you do ensures that clients return. We know that you have good drive/by walk by traffic, so your signage and outside messages are vitally important. They need to stand out and clearly have your salon name and contact number. They must also reflect your image.
Always remember, you pay rent not just for your floor space, but also for your window. So use it! Market with it effectively. Open your salon up so people walking past can see you are busy and happening. People like to choose a salon that is busy because it says you are good at what you do. Let them see it.
A Walk By/Drive By Salon Marketing Plan
There are some great marketing strategies you can put into your marketing plan.
Banners that change regularly, displaying your current promotion
Pay for a train fare if you are near a railway station so clients can travel to you by train
Pay for parking if clients need to pay a parking fee.
Have a 4-6 weekly message or promotion displayed in your front window
Use SMS/email marketing to fill short term appointments
Always have your service menu outside the salon so walk by prospects can take one
Shopping Centre Salon
One of the most valuable people in your salon in a shopping centre is your receptionist. If that person in not you, the salon owner, make sure they are the best you can get. They can make or break your business. They are in control of who and how many come into your salon. You need to say yes to absolutely everything that can be taken without detracting from the quality of service. In shopping centres people have another option very close by. Always keep clients in the front of the salon to give the feeling of being busy.
A Shopping Centre Salon Marketing Plan
Marketing dollars need to be spent wisely on internal concepts. The front of your salon is the best marketing tool you have. Thousands of clients and prospective clients pass daily and you need to clearly and in an exciting way tell them what you have that they want and need.
Some ideas that work:
Reward for buying retail products a return service at a value added price.
Tenants newsletter that offers fellow tenants rewards or offers for a limited period
Cross marketing with the coffee shop that is at your front door. Provide the coasters with an invitation to visit your salon
Get involved with centre promotions
Have your service menus at the information counter with inserts of current promotions
Use the centre PA system to promote
It doesn’t matter where you are positioned, but it does matter who you are and how you do it. Your reputation, wherever you might be positioned, will grow and be one to be proud of if you do it well. If you don’t get it right you will always struggle to have a full appointment book and all your chairs full. Which is of course the only measurement of a successful salon.

Staying Up In A Down Economy

There are only two ways that you can ever control the ebbs and flows of business.
